Pokémon: Too Many Types 2 is out!

Notable YouTuber and streamer Alpharad has been known to fund a few Pokémon fan projects, enabling Kobazco and the team at Too Many Productions to create hacks such as Super MarioMon, and Too Many Types. This Pokémon Emerald hack added more than 60 new types to the game, rewriting the experience of the game and entirely changing up the rules of Pokémon type matchups. Now, the anticipated sequel to Too Many Types has finally release, adding a total of 80 new types to the game! I decided to jump in to try it out, give a couple light intro thoughts, and link to the projects so that you can play it for yourself!

Jumping into it, I love how quickly things get started. Your mom gives you the Pokénav and the Running Shoes right away, you meet the neighbor, get your starter (alongside the Pokédex and Pokénav!), and you're off. Very little downtime, very little handholding, thrown right into your own Pokémon adventure with... albeit very little direction after you leave the house. The Pokémon selection as soon as you leave town is very interesting, finding Pokémon like Galarian Zigzagoon and Sewaddle. The UI is very clean, at times being stock Gen 3 UI, and sometimes using styles from other games like HeartGold/SoulSilver, notably in the Pokédex. Overall, there's a big focus on quality of life, being able to access the PC from anywhere via the Pokénav, infinite rare candies and level cap candies in the invetory by default, trade evolutions being updated to not require trading, checking the type and other details of an opposing Pokémon in battle, etc. I won't pretend like this isn't a really nice change overall, and adds to the experience of Pokémon on the GBA.

In terms of the signiture gimmick, it sure does add more types. Too many, some might say. The Hackdex page for TMT2 features official documentation with the full updated type chart, and even after zooming out to 50% size, it's still too big to fit it all on one screen. I definitely won't be able to memorize everything, so having the documentation be public like this is incredibly useful. The team really outdid themselves with the sheer volume of types and matchups in this game!

As is to be expected of a Too Many Productions Pokémon project, the art is wonderful, everything looks and controls great. Not only are there custom GBA sprites for generation 4-9 Pokémon that appear here, there's also original male and female trainers to play as! It's a very well-crafted hack as always, and the Too Many Productions team should be proud of releasing yet another great Pokémon adventure! I mean, Super MarioMon just came out back in April, and they've already hit another big release right at the end of 2025. This team is relentless, and I hope they get recognized for the work they've put into the Pokémon fandom through these projects!

These things tend to get updated as times goes on, but TMT2 is currently on version 1.1.0 and is available on Hackdex, here. Alternatively, if you want to play it on a modded 3DS, I've created a custom Virtual Console for it, which you can download on Internet Archive! (up to date as of version 1.1.0)

Pokémon hack projects have only gotten bigger and more impressive as time has gone on, and I love seeing what Kobazco and the Too Many Productions team are doing with these more than 20-year-old games! I've only played a very little introductory bit of the game, so I mostly wanted to pitch a few of the obvious details, and try and link people towards a really cool Pokémon fan project that a lot of people may not have heard of yet. Looking forward to playing more of Too Many Types 2, and hell, I still need to finish Super MarioMon! I highly recommend taking a look at the other projects this team has done, and dive into some Too Many Types 2 if you have the time!
